Overview
I work with large Clinical Trial data sets using SAS and R to help analyse this data and create reports to then feed back. I spend most of my time in R and Excel and also using PowerPoint to give my reports.
Skills
Learnt a lot of communication and working as a team, especially knowing when and who to ask for help when I'm stuck.
Responsibilities
I have been in 2 departments here at GSK, in the first I didn't have much responsibility as it was all high priority work being done so I mainly shadowed other Statisticians. However, in my second rotation I have been given a lot of responsibility and am treated as an equal team member. I have also been able to contribute a lot of work to two scientific papers that will be published.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support during my placement, the hard part was knowing who and when to ask as sometimes this can be quite intimidating, but whenever I asked for help I was supported well.
Culture
I think there's a really good company culture in my department. We are given realistic deadlines that sometimes we must work hard to meet but I don't feel overworked. There are also lots of different Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) which I take an active part in so this is a good way to meet people and feel comfortable at work.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my placement. It was extremely sociable since there's so many IPs and the work has been varied and interesting.
Yes
You must be passionate about what you're doing. The work is far easier when you're interested in the topic.
