    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I led a major project after proving my capabilities, and supported a campus-wide project with major business impact. I was mostly responsible for my own work but had help and guidance when needed. My manager ultimately made sure everything was alight regarding the quality and timeliness of my work, understanding that I was still learning and wasn't expected to be perfect.

  • I received enough support and guidance but it wasn't excessive. I learned to ask for help when needed, as my independence was respected. I was guided on important subjects and tasks in a respectful and professional manner, which fostered a positive learning environment and enhanced my work experience without being overbearing or patronising.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • My immediate team was inclusive and welcoming, fostering a sense of belonging quickly. However, there were broader cultural challenges, including a noticeable divide between office and shop floor staff. Some employees adhered to a more traditional office culture and values, demonstrating a lack of understanding towards diverse identities. Certain departments still exhibited a 'lad' culture, which could create discomfort as a young diverse individual in the workplace.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • My placement was generally enjoyable and valuable. Pushing beyond my comfort zone was challenging but beneficial for my growth. Social activities like team lunches, nights out, and volunteering enriched my experience. Accepting and managing less enjoyable tasks is part of any job, but it contributed to my personal development and understanding of real-world work environments

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
  • My advice is to show your eagerness to learn. As a student, you're not expected to be an expert, just ready to learn. Good communication and confidence are key. Be open about your strengths and weaknesses, and highlight your active efforts to improve. Enthusiasm can often be as important as technical knowledge in these roles, so let your passion show through in your application and interview.
