Overview
I helped produce the quarterly release of the sector and financial accounts - a release which is part of the National Accounts. Alongside this I produced analysis to complement the statistics - detailing changes in the UK economic climate. Additionally, I presented to colleagues internally on the economics of the month, and detailed the policies government were implementing - to better understand the impact on different economic indicators.
Skills
I gained a lot of experience in presenting, report producing, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement - internally, across over government departments, and externally.
Responsibilities
At times, for some of the work I had complete autonomy and worked with lots of senior people - allowing for a great deal of exposure. However, the day to day job was relatively junior.
Support & Guidance
There was a big student placement community and dedicated staff to help students with various different issues.
Culture
Very supportive and friendly work environment. Pleasure to work at the ONS.
Your Impressions
I am glad I did a placement at the ONS. While it was during Covid-19, it was still great fun and would certainly recommend it to people interested in economics and would like to explore a career in the civil service.
Yes
Read about the civil service behaviours, and practice the STAR technique. If you have a genuine interest in economics make sure to talk about it.
