Overview
There was an introduction session which was information about the company. This came from people that work there and interns. It gave insight into affinity groups and how each person's daily routine may look like (given that they had different roles). Majority of the programme was based on workshops which essentially was an intense coding programme. We worked through tough problems be it individually and in pairs.
Skills
I was not new to a defensive programming style however, this was the first time that I was introduced to the concept of constructing a test before writing any code. The idea is that we build from the failed test and continue making more. Once you get the hang of it, it is actually a very nice way to go about problem solving. A lot of major programming concepts were covered too.
Business Insight
It was quite eye-opening. I knew Amazon was a big company but I didn't realise just how many fields of industry it catered to. It is incredible that there is such versatility in one company. I was especially impressed with how fast jobs seems to progress or how quickly you are able to move in the company. Given such an environment, I can see why people would want to work there and stay there.
Culture
It is a very welcoming atmosphere. People were very warm and seemed genuine when expressing positive thoughts and experiences with the company. The company culture around customer service is especially impressive and makes me appreciate the services more.
Your Impressions
It was an incredible opportunity that I am glad I was able to take part in; while the coding exercises were difficult at times, I really enjoyed taking apart the problem and making an attempt at solving them. Generally, listening to my mentor and others talk about their experience was really insightful as it gave a first-hand genuine impression.
Yes
Make your CV look simple and nice. It needs to look nice to be remembered however, it needs to be simple in order to be readable. Know that there will be many applicants so yours needs to stand out. Furthermore, show genuine interest and be keen to learn. That is the quality that is most important for students as we don't have experience to prove ourselves.
