Overview
The Insight involved presentations from speakers, software engineers, and interns on how it is to work at Amazon. It also included coding workshops where we learned a lot of things ranging from gathering requirements, and testing, to debugging. There were also adequate breaks in between for refreshments and this was super helpful.
Skills
New Skills: I learned about the different testing concepts in software engineering and the importance. I also got to know more about other types of bugs such as memory leak, stack overflow etc. I understood hashmaps more and got tips on improving my technical skills. Existing skills: I learned about requirements gathering and why it is very important in the Software Development Life Cycle(SDLC) and also improved my Java programming skills.
Business Insight
The sessions on that were super helpful as they really delved deeper into understanding what is required of you as a developer, Amazon's leadership principles and affinity groups and many others. Hearing about the personal experiences of current interns also helped me understand more about the different sectors in Amazon and the potential roles available.
Culture
It was really obvious that they are customer obsessed and they really care about ownership and delivering results. Our hosts/moderators were super friendly, helpful and always ready to answer any questions. They also did a good job in ensuring that all activities take place as at when due. Overall, it was challenging and rewarding at the same time as I got to make new connections and clarifiy my next steps in improving technical skills.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the sessions and workshops as there was like a good deal of balance between them. Also, our mentors were patient with us in solving challenges and explaining our thought process.
Yes
I would say know your Computer Science fundamentals. Practice your coding skills and learn how to communicate your thought process. Have a tailored and well written CV as that will be the first stage of the screening process. Prepare well for the interview to talk about your skills, experiences and projects.
