Overview
I was essentially a marketing project manager within the skin cleansing category working with brands such as Lifebuoy, Dove and Lux. I had to Send out emails to project teams every start of the month asking them to upload their desired projects that they would like to go to the Investor Board to be approved. There were 6 phases before the Investor Board meeting and I made sure all steps were fulfilled within the deadlines.
Skills
I have learnt and mastered my Excel skills, for example I can now link spreadsheets to different tabs in the same document. This role has also helped sharpen my organisational skills for example I now set aside time within my work calendar to ensure that the tasks for the day are fulfilled. I also had to communicate with senior managers about the investor board projects so my communication skills have advanced greatly as a result of that.
Responsibilities
I was given great responsibility when it came to managing the investor board process. I was in charge of deciding which projects went to the Investor Board meetings based on if they met the specific criteria within the stipulated timeframe. I was also in charge of setting time for the meeting that what convenient for both the Western and Eastern world project teams. so in the aspect Of managing the investor board process solely I was given great responsibility. However, for other process such as project reviews I wasn't so hands on.
Support & Guidance
During my first week of the placement my first manager created a learning and training plan that was super helpful in propelling me towards success when it came down to mastering the investor board process and understanding the different terms used in the company. I was also required to enrol in a 5 day long Innovation training camp to help enhance my knowledge. In terms of support, I was available if I needed it from my manager.
Culture
Overall the atmosphere in the work place was welcoming, there have been instances when strangers within the company have introduced themselves to be randomly and asked me if i was an intern and they have also offered advice. These sort of experiences were heart warming and made me feel included. I also made friends with the other interns across different functions so we were able to share frustrations, questions and answers with each other when needed.
Your Impressions
Overall, i enjoyed my placement especially after the second half of my placement as I was finally given more responsibility and autonomy after months of training and doing small tasks i was able to work on my own section. I enjoyed the team days out of the office If a team member was leaving or moving functions but I would've liked if I was included and notified about more training and meeting days outside of the office with my team.
Yes
My main advice would be to research the function you intend to apply to so you understand the responsibilities and expectations of you in the role if you hopefully get it. I would also say to make sure you are willing to learn and at a fast past as the industry unilever operates in is a fast past industry and so aspect can change at any time so make sure you are able to adapt to change. Lastly, be yourself in the application process!
