Business Operations/Management Consultant Review

My job role during my placement year will be to assist the Distribution Sector in strategy and research, marketing and communications, asset develpoment, coordinating sector projects, financial review and analysis, and helping it become a better place to work. I will also be aligned to the Consumer Packaged Goods sector where I will work with clients as a consultant in project management and in bid facilitation. Finally, I will support other initiatives in the organisation as "giveback" such as internal programs to support diversity.

During my placement, I had the opportunity to acquire a diverse range of skills that have significantly enriched my professional repertoire. I honed my proficiency in utilizing essential tools like Excel and PowerPoint, enhancing my ability to analyze data and present information effectively. Moreover, I developed invaluable soft skills, including adeptness in time management, prioritization, and communication, which have proven vital in navigating complex work environments. Additionally, I deepened my technical knowledge by gaining insights into the inner workings of ERP systems, PLM systems, and broader technological advancements. These newfound skills and knowledge have undoubtedly strengthened my capabilities and positioned me for continued success in my professional journey.

Throughout my placement, I was entrusted with a remarkable level of responsibility, frequently engaging in critical work for clients. This hands-on experience allowed me to make significant contributions to various tasks and projects, thereby playing a meaningful role in the organization's overall operations. Additionally, I had the privilege of actively supporting the core functions of the business, participating in crucial activities that extended beyond the typical scope of an intern's role. This multifaceted involvement enabled me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the organization and contributed to my professional growth in a manner that sets me apart from many other interns.

Throughout my placement, I received exceptional levels of support and guidance from various individuals within the organization. I had the privilege of working closely with a dedicated HR manager who provided valuable assistance in managing operational aspects such as leave requests and addressing any pay-related concerns. Additionally, I had the opportunity to collaborate closely with one manager, fostering a strong working relationship and allowing for in-depth discussions regarding work-related matters. Simultaneously, having another manager who offered an outside perspective proved beneficial, enabling me to gain diverse insights and alternative viewpoints. Furthermore, I was fortunate to have a network of approachable individuals whom I could readily rely upon for support, ensuring I always felt well-supported throughout my placement.

The overall company culture and atmosphere were truly remarkable. Despite operating within a high-pressure environment characterized by tight deadlines, there was a prevailing sense of respect for work-life balance, and unrealistic expectations were not imposed. Additionally, the people within the organization exhibited exceptional friendliness, and there was a noticeable absence of a rigid hierarchy. One could comfortably approach individuals at various levels within the company to seek guidance or address inquiries. While it is natural for a few exceptions to exist in any organization, the prevailing atmosphere fostered an inclusive and collaborative environment, making it a genuinely positive place to work.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement experience, although there were certain aspects that could have been improved, particularly towards the latter part of my tenure when I began to feel a sense of monotony and fatigue with my assigned tasks. However, the social aspect of the placement was undoubtedly a highlight, as the individuals I worked alongside were exceptionally friendly, fostering a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. The presence of a large group of fellow interns further enhanced the social dynamics, as we frequently engaged in shared outings and created lasting memories together. Despite the occasional challenges, my overall experience was highly enjoyable and rewarding.

My advice to you would be to embrace authenticity and be true to yourself. The remarkable individuals within the company thrive on genuine connections and appreciate individuals who stay true to their own unique qualities. Furthermore, once you join, make a conscious effort to network and explore various facets of the business. The company's vast size presents a multitude of opportunities, and by venturing into different areas, you can gain valuable insights and discover your true passion. It can be challenging to discern one's desired path within such a large organization, but by actively exploring and engaging with different departments, you'll have a better understanding of where your interests lie.
