The Role
Students are treated like any other member of staff and are always happy to help you out.
My manager and supervisor were very supportive, but not overbearing. I could work independently and make my own decisions but they gave guidance where needed.
There were fluctuations in work flow with some weeks being busy and others quite quiet but generally a good balance. I could manage my own time and plan to work at a pace that suits me. There was no pressure to do more than I could manage.
I was given adequate responsibility. I would meet with my supervisor and manager once a week to discuss my work and current objectives, then based on suggestions in these meetings plan my own experiments and schedule for the week.
The skills gained from a year in industry are invaluable. I greatly increased my practical skills in the laboratory and learnt a lot about the science in my field, as well as experiencing what a career in research is really like. Additionally you enhance many transferable skills like communication, problem solving, accountability, time management and presentation skills.
The Company
There was a good atmosphere that allows some fun but remains conducive to working.
The placement itself was well set up. However the recruitment company responsible for our pay was not so well organised with many people having problems, although the majority of this were resolved relatively quickly.
The amount off support received amounts to a significant investment of time, and any training necessary to fulfil your role was given.

The current economic climate means recruitment is relatively low. Glaxo has various graduate schemes available, for which any placement students are eligible to apply for a fast track entry into the interviewing process. However there is not a graduate scheme for R&D.
The Culture
Glaxo recruits a lot of placement students so there was a good social scene. The majority of people live with other students. Socialising with colleagues is more variable, but most groups at least have pub lunches or meals out for birthdays, leavign dos and special occasions etc.
Stevenage is just outside London with prices to match.
Stevenage has several pubs, but really the best option for a night out would be to travel to Cambridge or Central London, which are both expensive, especially at weekends.
There were not that many opportunities available in Stevenage.
