Overview
Working in the lab on developing a new assay/optimising an existing assay - including design of experiments, planning, carrying it out and collecting data. Meeting with others to discuss my results, what they might mean, next steps. I was also involved in conceptualisation of my project, so was able to influence its direction, and I was given the freedom to spend time on data analytics, so a lot of time using Python too.
Skills
Absolutely! My programming skills have developed a lot, I have learnt machine learning, and I have developed an understanding of how lab science is carried out in industry.
Responsibilities
Yes - I had support if needed but was largely independent and I felt that the results that I found were trusted and used to make decisions by others, which was really cool.
Support & Guidance
I received support and guidance when I asked for it - my supervisor wasnt necessarily an expert in all the things I was doing but support arranged via others in most cases for these scenarios
Culture
Great! Lots going on, and there are lots of other placement students (and apprentices too) which provides a support network
Your Impressions
Overall I loved my placement and it was great for my personal development. There were definitely challenges too - but I am also grateful for these as I have learnt a lot and this will be really valuable moving forwards into the workplace.
Yes
Go for it! Be prepared to put yourself out there - it won't always be easy but there will be lots of great moments, you will meet friends for life, and have massively enhanced vision of future careers, skills and employability. Get someone you trust and someone who doesnt know you to proofread the application/CV (careers service). Practice interviews - for the confidence boost - but avoid cultivating practised answers - stay authentic and honest.
