The Role
Being away from friends and university was hard at times-uprooting to a new place on your own knowing noone or what there is to do etc, overall definitely a good experience from the science/placement side though
Very welcoming and friendly department, included me in everything and showed an interest in me/what I do outside of work etc
Anything I asked was explained and help given when/where required. I'm not good at asking/don't like to interrupt their work so didn't get as much as i could have
Varied over the placement and the work going on in the group. Overall it averaged out but had some fairly empty days and some very busy
Certain aspects I was entirely responsible for, others I had little to do with because of safety/experience etc
Very specialized department therefore trained for specific area for future, but learned general skills associated with the workplace, time management prioritizing work, people skills and juggling day-time work (job) with university assignments
The Company
On the whole there was chattering and talking about things, was quiet at times but about right to let people get on with work in quiet
Most things were already in place for my arrival/starting out/getting inducted and user accounts etc set up. My placement has been going on a long time so well established with my supervisor and he knows what to do.
No particular investment, but free training courses and online tutorials etc with on-the-job training, and gave me the time to go to a conference.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Current job climate would make it unlikely I'd get a job straight away with them, but are prospects for future.
The Culture
Students did lots together - went out on nights/weekends etc and live together.
Didn't do much - living/accomodation was average and comparable to university, not much else to do except generic cinema etc which is a fairly standard price.
Very little - some pubs etc in town to go to.
Sports club and emailed events going on to encourage people to take part/do things for various reasons/causes.
