Skills
In terms of skills and knowledge gained during my time at Honda, there has been a lot! Working at Honda not only allowed me to gain valuable skills and knowledge in the automotive industry but also expanded my general skillset, including my placement objective of Excel and PowerPoint with the overarching theme of data analysis. For me, my interpersonal and teamwork soft skills developed consistently over the duration of the placement. Speaking with customers at large-scale events such as Motorcycle Live not only helped to develop my skillset in dealing with customers and assisting their needs, but the more relaxed event setting enabled me to have more time to have casual conversations with my team in a non-corporate setting, which lent me several opportunities for more cultural awareness, general interpersonal skills, as well as the opportunity for emotional intelligence, consequently enabling me to connect more with members of my team.
Responsibilities
It's fair to say I was given an appropriate amount of responsibility over the course of my placement. I will also add it was useful that these responsibilities were increased over time, enabling me to settle in and get comfortable. My responsibilities are: • Look after the Honda School of Motoring claims system. • Conduct research and analysis upon request of those in the team; this can vary from competitor analysis in terms of models offered to in-depth research on what other manufacturers have on offer for new riders or off-road adventure days. • communicating with and assisting any dealers with any queries they may have. • Developing and proposing new campaign offers and initiatives. • Supporting Honda at brand events such as Motorcycle Live. • Provide data on tactical marketing initiatives.
Support & Guidance
Personally, I didn't receive a great deal of support or guidance - However this was not the fault of Honda and I was aware that my manager was available for any support. My personal work style means I'm generally not one to ask many questions & once I have an understanding of the task I will simply 'crack on'.
Culture
The company culture and atmosphere was impeccable, as a motorcyclist myself I felt that my values and company culture aligned perfectly. The team was very welcoming and a pleasure to work with throughout, making the transition from university to the work place easy & stress free.
Your Impressions
Very much so! The placement was a fantastic experience throughout and to earn & learn at the same time, whilst taking a break from studies was an opportunity I didn't want to miss. The diverse nature of the role, from marketing to campaigns to event support, meant that I was never bored or found work tedious. Not only this but it led to a large amount of skills learned & refined across a range of disciplines.
Yes
Have a genuine passion for automotive and the company. Honda is a history & culture rich company, this cannot be understated so genuine interest in Honda's past achievements is paramount. Write a good cover letter as to why you'd be a good fit for the company, if you struggle with this, Honda is likely not the place for you. Having technical knowledge on the product range and competitors is also highly useful.
