Overview
I was involved in different supply chain projects relating to skincare where I got to support in the conceptualisation of a new sustainability project. I got to interact with global teams on sourcing opportunities and co-ordination of teams on various supply chain projects. Throughout the year, I got to participate in several open days and a competition within Unilever as well.
Skills
I have grown a lot in my technical and public speaking skills, as I have had to give several presentations throughout the year and also taught myself new software (namely Power BI and Wordwall). I have began to grow my soft skills in networking too and aim to continue growing them and keeping in contact with people going forwards.
Responsibilities
I feel like I wasn't given a lot of responsibility due to the field I was in and that I worked remotely through the year. A lot of my role was supporting other supply chain colleagues on bigger projects which I appreciated being able to learn from them, but wished I had more projects that I was in charge of.
Support & Guidance
A lot of the support I was given was directing me to digital tools (Degreed, LinkedIn learning etc) as opposed to hands on support/training. I wish there were more in person sessions organised for that. However, I did not fully utilise the surrounding network so could've reached out more.
Culture
I loved the culture at Unilever. Everyone was very supportive and understanding, making it a very nice working environment. It was easy to reach out for help and when I was going through personal issues, everyone around me was very understanding of my mental state at the time and gave me the space to grieve.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement a lot! I found the experience I gained invaluable and gave a real insight to the world of Supply Chain that I was unaware of before. It has helped me to understand better what I want to do going forwards with my career as I would love to work in product development of beauty.
Yes
Be as honest as you can. The people are very understanding that you don't know anything and use that to your advantage. I regret not reaching out as much as I could because I felt like I should know what I was doing. And make the most of every opportunity possible!!
