The Role
Great placement for students - i worked on a wide range of projects and gained valuable experience which i can take back to University. I have developed greatly as an engineer through this placement and built up some great evidence towards my chartership ocne i graduate.
I was trusted with projects and work which i carried out individually, i was welcomed by my whole team and my colleagues always had time to explain concepts i was unfamiliar with. I was assigned a supervisor i worked closely with in my team and also a mentor to help me guage my progress through my internship.
I was given support when needed by my manager and supervisor, they always had time to explain things to me when i was unsure. Overall the company has a great culture for intern students within it.
I always had work to carry out, and was never short of things to do. I was able to manage my own work load, taking on more work when i felt i could do so, and also decline work when i had a full schedule in the short term. The work is fairly flexible in my team allowing me to get involved in a wide variety of projects.
I was given a large amount of responsibility. I have been my own project lead for a novel technology feasibility study and have held major roles within team work. There has been no issues about responsibility for work i have carried out.
All of the work i have carried out will be invaluable at university. The work i have done this year has applied the theory and concepts in practical scenarios, something which i can take back to university in my final year design projects.
The Company
generally my office was pretty busy with everyone working very hard, but as a team we spent time together at lunch and coffee breaks. There has also been fun times with jokes in the office. Everyone in the team gets on really well and as a result we deliver great results when workign together.
I knew in advance who my line manager and mentor was, i had a full day induction prior to starting and then had everything set up in the office when i started. I settled in very quickly, was made to feel welcome and had projects to work on within a couple of days.
BP encouraged me to develop my skills, I attended a 2 day advanced simulation training course and my manager approved a budget for me to carry out personal development activities on work time. Members of my team were always keen to teach me new things taking time out from their daily work routines to do so.

As an intern i took part in an assessment centre for a graduate job where evidence i have built up throughout the year is taken into account. There is usually a fair number of graduate hires from the internship scheme.
The Culture
There were 6-7 year long interns at my site and we socialised together. The local area is a little slim on student type nights out, but central London, Twickenham, Kingston and Richmond are one train journey away.
Being in London it was fairly expensive but enjoyable and never a shortage of things to do.
Best nightlife is about a 15-20 minute train journey into central London or Kingston and Richmond are slightly closer for a good night out!
Many clubs and activities. Onsite gym and sports centre with squash, tennis and badminton courts.
