Overview
Cell culture work and generating edits in cells using CRISPR technology, then using PCR and other techniques to validate the edits. Also worked on small projects within the team. Mix of lab work and office work - writing up reports, writing protocols and producing presentations. Collaboration with other members in the team to optimise or run assays when they did not have time. Attend team and department meetings.
Skills
I had underestimated how many skills I would develop whilst on the placement - both soft and technical - and how much my confidence would increase. On placement you have access to techniques and equipment you are not exposed to at university. Prior to placement I had no lab experience and now I am competent in an array of techniques. Have also developed communication, organisation and other soft skills vital to the professional environment.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility from the start to work independently, however my supervisor was always there to contact when I needed help. It challenged me to think independently and try find my own answers before asking for help.
Support & Guidance
I had constant support from my supervisor and was able to reach out to anyone in my team for help. Everyone was very collaborative and willing to help where they could.
Culture
The atmosphere in Sweden was so collaborative and a great place to work and learn. There are endless opportunities to network and most people are more than happy to speak about their career and work. There was a great cohort of early career professionals and AZ inspire is great for meeting new people and doing different activities.
Your Impressions
I had the most incredible experience on my placement - exploring a new country, learning so much, and meeting new people. I think you get out of the experience what you put in and I made a lot of effort to network and explore career opportunities - which I definitely managed to achieve.
Yes
For application make sure you understand the company values and how these align with your own. Show your curiosity for science and desire to learn. As with any interview, make sure you are prepared with examples for the common questions. If successful, make sure you seize the opportunity to network and learn as many things as possible (even if not directly linked to your project).
