The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. The environment is amazing, everyone is so helpful and there is a real drive for excellence and personal development.
Microsoft value their interns just as much as any employee. We were given the same roles and responsibilities as everyone else, if anything we were valued more because of how quickly we adjust to role and the huge network we have.
No one at Microsoft will spoon feed you opportunity’s, but if you ask for something everyone is more than happy to provide support and guidance without thinking twice … its part of the culture.
Microsoft has a real work hard/play hard ethic. There were times when I did have to stay those extra few hours in the office or skip lunch, but is that really a bad thing considering all the rewards?

The skills i have developed this year will are invaluable. I will be using the experiences and skills i have gained at Microsoft forever.
The Company
In general the atmosphere at Microsoft is great. Everyone is really friendly and keen to have a laugh. There is the odd day were people are sitting in silence working (usually a Monday morning!) but its an office so its expected.
The internship especially for my business area was really well setup with specific training, volunteering opportunity’s and events.
Microsoft really pushes personal development, it is even one of the things you are measured on at the end of the year. There were a few training opportunity’s that i really had to fight for but I was always aloud in the end.

There is a great future prospect of the Graduate MACH scheme at Microsoft although as an Intern you are not guaranteed a job or even guaranteed to make it to the assessment center. The roles available are also quite slim.
The Culture
The social scene is pretty much like still being at uni. There is over 100 placement students and we had team bonding exercises throughout the year as well as social events.
Compared to living in London Reading is pretty cheap. Although compared to anywhere that is not a main city it’s pretty pricy.
The Nightlife in Reading is great as it is a Student Town. There is loads of clubs and bars and London is only half an hour away by train,
There are lots of clubs to get involved with outside of work although apart from that I personally didn’t find much else going on in Reading.
