Overview
Towards the beginning of the week we were given an in-depth introduction via video call to the wide range of existing and prospective legal services offered by Gateley—not only locally but across the country. The rest of the week was spent learning the ins and outs of our pre-assigned departments to ensure we had a real-life taste of what it was like working as a full-time trainee.
Skills
We were given lots of opportunities to develop our legal expertise and judgement. Tasks frequently required good communication and networking abilities—and included researching legal issues and analysing the data presented via deeds and other formal documents.
Business Insight
It was invaluable learning about the distinction between practising law and engaging in the delivery of Gateley's additional legal services. There's a lot of cross-collaboration within the firm and it became clear very quickly that the company is tech-enabled and multi-disciplinary. Business and technological competencies are considered equally as important as an applicant's legal expertise—and learning about how this impacts potential roles was fascinating.
Culture
An integral part of the business and the backbone of its happy workforce, employees seemed to find real value in their work. There is a distinct corporate culture but the office isn't buttoned up. Staff worked hard but found time to socialise and let their hair down. Vacation scheme participants were invited to after work drinks and were encouraged to get involved in office initiatives that raised money for charity.
Your Impressions
I found Gateley's vacation scheme to be a tremendous opportunity. Trying to kick-start your legal career is rarely smooth sailing and this experience allowed me to learn from experts who have already been where I am right now. If you're also working to get your career off the ground, the business relationships and legal knowledge you'll learn from this placement will be extremely beneficial.
Yes
I recommend attending one of the firm's insight evenings to get a better understanding of Gateley prior to applying for the vacation scheme. It's a great opportunity to meet current trainees, newly qualified solicitors, and partners—all of whom will later recognise you during your time in the office. The firm also seems to appreciate authenticity, so be yourself!
