Overview
I was in Gateley's Corporate Law Team, working on research tasks, filling out a stat book and learning how to use DocuSign. We were all assigned a trainee buddy to supervise us, and would work alongside the rest of the corporate team. We also had the opportunity to speak to various people in almost every department area, attended socials and had an interview for a training contract near the end of the week.
Skills
Further developed communication skill, attention to detail, legal knowledge, confidence and ability to practically apply the law.
Business Insight
Very insightful. Everyone was so open and lovely, more than willing to tell you more about their practice area and why they chose it, as well as any information you wanted to know about the training process.
Culture
Really lovely. It was somewhat intimidating to approach certain people at first, but you would quickly discover that they were just as nice as everyone else. People were friendly, helpful and would go out of their way to talk to you.
Your Impressions
Really enjoyed it. My only complaint is that it did not last long enough. It would have been even better if we had another week where we were placed in a different department (perhaps we could choose three options of departments that is/has become of interest to us over the week) so that we could meet even more people and gain a deeper insight into their work.
Yes
Be genuine and open in your VS interview, and research the firm well. Also, it doesn't matter how old you are (just finished second year or having been out of Uni for a decade) or if you did a law degree, there were all kinds of people from all different backgrounds on my VS. Best of luck!
