Overview
The spring week was very insightful. The sessions were well structured, giving attendees a clear picture of the quantitative finance industry and the role G-Research plays in it. The deep dive sessions in coding, finance and statistics were also good fun, consisting of self-contained yet interesting hands on challenges. The Machine Learning workshop was covered a wide range of skillsets by allowing attendees to choose between three different levels. Finally the location was breathtaking, for relaxing breaks and outdoor activities.
Skills
The insight week gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about the quantitative finance industry. The scope of the week was not to acquire new technical skills (in coding or statistics) but to give attendees a good understanding of an industry which sometimes might appear a bit opaque from the outside. Understanding the pipeline a firm like G-Research operates and how this fits in the wider financial sector was the main takeaway from the insight week for me.
Business Insight
The insight week gave attendees a very good overview of the jobs available at G-Research and their application process. The main focus was on the Internship and Graduate programs, as these were the roles which attendees could apply for. The Talent Acquisition team was very helpful throughout the whole week, answering questions about the roles and the application process. It was very interesting to learn about how these roles fit into the wider firm and potential career paths.
Culture
The company culture seemed quite nice. While it is not an industry where social relations are central, everyone representing the firm at the insight was friendly and open to share their experience at the firm. The social events were pleasant and very well organized. We took part in nice outdoors activities (Segway tour and Ebike ride), very nice gala dinners and a thrilling sunset cruise. The quality of the events was incredible, thank you to all he organizers!
Your Impressions
As described in the previous questions, I found the spring into quantitative finance week enjoyable under all aspects: engaging in the technical deep dive sessions and attending the talks giving insights into the quantitative finance industry, finding out about the potential roles available at the company, participating in the social and networking events. Moreover, I really enjoyed meeting the other attendees, a cohort of bright students from all over the world with similar interests but varied backgrounds.
Yes
I would suggest brushing up on their basic mathematical and statistical knowledge, but most importantly being confident when discussing their own research or work. Moreover, they should understand whether the financial industry is a good fit for them and what sparked their interest in the company. Finally I would suggest looking up some financial news, with a particular focus on the quantitative side of things, especially if their background is in a different technical subject.
