    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role at PepsiCo has been within the transform process function, which works with breakthrough machinery that will not be used commercially for the next 3-5 years. I have become familiar with this new machinery, and brainstormed ideas for designs that could demonstrate the capabilities of each machine. I have worked with mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, physicists and food scientists. My work also includes attending meetings and webinars and discussing machinery requirements with the external companies that are developing them.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Pursuing a placement at PepsiCo has provided opportunities for me to develop my professional skill set and work with people with a wide range of talents and specializations. It has allowed me an insight into my career choices and a more in depth understanding of industrial design and the constraints of working at a commercial scale. I have developed my skill with time management, communication both virtually and in-person, my ability to plan and present reports and presentations, and my skill in SOLIDWORKS.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given the opportunity to lead a project almost in its entirety. I was responsible for planning each stage of the project and utilized Gantt charts to make this easier. I was able to delegate tasks to Global Process Center operators, and plan in advance to ensure their time was used most efficiently. I presented my findings to staff members across multiple levels in the company, including a senior executive and a PepsiCo fellow.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a very supportive manager during my time at PepsiCo. We scheduled multiple check-ins throughout the week to make sure I was on task, and they helped me work out how to prioritize my project tasks. The first few weeks of onboarding were very difficult for me, as there was too much information and not enough guidance. However, the first gen team were very receptive to feedback and the onboarding has been improved for this year's interns.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture at PepsiCo is hierarchical. The company is attempting to move away from this style of working, but it is prevalent in all areas of the workplace. The general atmosphere is positive, though during a 'restructuring' that occurred midway through my placement there was notable tension. Email communication is polite and semi-formal, although messages via zoom can be a little more enthusiastic and emojis can be used. I found that I missed the creative environment of my university, as PepsiCo does tend to be more rigid and organized.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • On the whole, I enjoyed my placement. I got on well with the staff and other interns, and I feel like I made a difference with diversity, equality and inclusion by giving feedback and joining the company DE&I group. I liked how much freedom I got with my projects, and I was able to produce good results. As a creative and neurodiverse person, I do not think PepsiCo is the right fit for me. I am glad I completed my internship, and will take the skills I have developed to new ventures.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to PepsiCo
  • I would advise you to enjoy the interview process and connect with your fellow applicants. If you are successful, organize with other interns to live in a group accommodation, which will help with your social life. Connect with previous interns and ask them questions about their roles and advice they may have for you. Enjoy the city you move to, Leicester is fantastic and has a great music scene. Do not stress too hard over anything, and prioritize skill development and networking. Have fun!
