Overview
I worked in product engineering roles. My day to day work is designing components using CAD software, completing necessary simulations on these components (FEA) and ensuring the parts adhere to the design standard here at HPP. This was often in the form of designing multiple components for an assembly. Along with this, I completed the necessary paperwork and reviews of my designs as well an working with programme management to organise when these parts would be released
Skills
Improved my CAD skills Using FEA software Increase in general engineering knowledge Developed organisational skills
Responsibilities
During the first half, no not much as there wasnt much responsibility to have due to the nature of the department I was in During my second half, after a department change (happens to most Mech Eng placements) I had much more responsibility
Support & Guidance
HPP has a very healthy approach to helping those who are unsure, I was always given the time to provided help
Culture
In terms of a 'blame' culture, HPP has none existent. I was never made to feel at fault in any way for my mistakes and the first action was always how to fix it In terms of working hours, many departments in HPP have a standard of working past contracted hours, although I never experiences this due to the departments I worked in.
Your Impressions
Overall I enjoyed my time at HPP, I know a few people who have completed this placement in the past and did not enjoy it as much as I did. I feel this is down to where you are placed and which team leaders you work under. Due to the large quantity of placement/graduate/apprentices at HPP, it is very easy to make friends your own age.
Yes
Set boundaries for working and do not stay at work later than you need to. Also, do not be afraid of asking for help as it will always be provided. Definitely strive to make friends here as there are plenty of opportunity to be able to do this
