    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was made solely responsible of a range of development and sustainment projects for a historically significant Martin-Baker ejection seat platform. I managed major projects by working with the relevant engineering teams to confidently deliver elements of the project. Additionally, I experienced large amounts of client exposure through customer visits and regular meetings. I also provided internal auxiliary support such as leading team resource planning meetings and representing the department during wider company meetings.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Soft skills such as formal written and verbal, technical communication with the customer and other members of the business. Hosting client visits and representing the company during external visits. Presentation skills and leading large group meetings, in person and virtually. Developed experience with management software such as PMS and Microsoft Project. Gained familiarity and experience with common engineering software such as Teamcenter and SAP. Gained meaningful experience managing major projects.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Despite the Assistant job title and previous experience, I was made solely responsible for a current, in-service ejection seat. Additionally, I was entrusted with representing the company during customer engagements.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Discounting the technical software elements of the role, the programme management skills were learned and developed using an on-the-job and sink/swim training approach which proved to be very effective.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Most individuals are very friendly and will happily assist where required. The company does not put much emphasis on work-based socials/mixing events however which can sometimes create a somewhat clique environment.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I greatly enjoyed my placement due to the real-world impact that I knew my work had. I heavily expanded my network and developed knowledge and many skills that would be impossible to learn at university or during academia. The social side of the company was lacking in my opinion as work-based socials were rarely organised. I would recommend my role and the company in general for anyone who'd like to gain hands-on experience in a world-renowned firm, working on an interesting product based in the aerospace industry.

  • 7. Would you recommend Martin-Baker Aircraft Company to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Martin-Baker Aircraft Company
  • Besides a good predicted grade for an engineering-related degree (which other applicants would have), it is essential to tailor the application, CV and cover letter to the specific role that you are applying for. Previous professional/high-level experience and additional qualifications that relate to the role you are applying to, would greatly support your application. A good predicted grade alone is probably not sufficient. In regards to the interview, due to the pandemic and the new world of work, I would recommend becoming familiar and comfortable with conversing virtually.
