Overview
I was primarily responsible for devising and carrying out chemical reactions. The products created were analysed using a broad range techniques. The data produced then had to be transferred into appropriate presentations which were delivered on a monthly basis. I also participated in the day-to-day lab activities, such as in accepting deliveries, auditing lab areas and keeping everything clean.
Skills
My placement year has been really valuable in helping me to develop both as a chemist and as a person. Firstly, my lab work has greatly improved in quality and speed. I am also now much more confident in my own abilities which has greatly helped in improving my presentation skills.
Responsibilities
I felt on the same level as my supervisors in terms of responsibility once I had completed my training. I was frequently given the opportunity to give my own interpretation of the data I acquired and then consequently guide my project in new directions. I also was given the opportunity to teach techniques to colleagues and handle important tasks, such as the deliveries of chemicals.
Support & Guidance
I received plenty of support during my placement, especially towards the beginning where I needed to be trained in all of the techniques and how to handle chemicals safely. I felt that I could always ask as many questions as needed and no question felt like a silly one!
Culture
The atmosphere within my department was perfect as I felt comfortable to ask any colleague for insight or guidance if needed. I also enjoyed being part of a UK wide sustainability group which enabled me to make contacts with people that I would’ve not spoken to otherwise and learn new skills outside of my job role.
Your Impressions
I found my placement year was an extremely valuable experience and I recommend it to anyone considering undertaking one. I really appreciated being able to clarify that working in industry will be something I want to do once I have completed my degree.
Yes
I would advise them to make sure they research the company and the general chemistry linked to what the site they’re applying to specialises in. This should ensure that they are fully prepared for both of the interviews!
