Vacation Schemer Review

The vacation scheme at Latham is a 2-week scheme, where participants experience two seats. I sat in Financial Regulation and subsequently in Litigation & Trial. During my two weeks at Latham I undertook pro bono work, conducted research for the Knowledge Management team and completed two Research Tasks for each of my seats. I also had the opportunity to interview for a Training Contract at Latham.

During my vacation scheme I learned about the importance of attention to detail and clarity when presenting information to the client. Through collaborating with my supervisors I also developed my communication skills. I also learned how to be receptive to feedback and follow guidance from a supervisor. I developed my legal research skills and concurrently learned how to write in a client-friendly tone.

Latham was very transparent about the business and potential roles available. Through committees such as AsComm and IPAC the firm develops a transparent, fair and robust process for career progression. At a vacation scheme level, the firm also assigns clear competencies that candidates have to demonstrate in order to receive a Training Contract offer.

The company culture was very impressive at Latham. All lawyers, from associate level to partner, are extremely friendly and grounded individuals, passionate about their job and eager to teach newcomers. Professionalism and integrity are big values for the firm.

I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation scheme. I believe that individuals on my cohort will become friends for a very long time, while I am extremely appreciative of the mentoring opportunities. The scheme was a perfect mix of intellectually challenging work alongside fun socializing activities.
