Overview
I sat in two departments over the scheme- Data & Technology Transactions and Structured Finance. Each week was divided between work shadowing, completing the research task and information sessions. We also had a trainee mentor and Recruitment Committee contact with who we had regular check-ins. We were also encouraged to engage with and meet people at the firm. Overall a great, jam-packed week!
Skills
I really developed my attention to detail, as much of the work I was submitted required close engagement with law and had to be formatted in a way which would be well received by a client. I also learnt how to draft arguments and documents, as well as working on legal software which I would not otherwise have had exposure to. I have also developed soft skills in communication and networking, as I had to engage with various people throughout the scheme. This included other Vac Schemers, Associates, Partners etc.
Business Insight
We had practice area overview sessions from most departments at the firm. These included information like what daily tasks would look like, typical trainee tasks, key deals they had worked on, as well as hot topics in their respective industries. People in general were very open to any questions, and happy to meet for coffees if we wanted to discuss anything further.
Culture
Everyone at the firm (from trainees to Partners) was incredibly approachable! Always smiling and happy to stop for a chat. The firm has a generally relaxed environment, though, of course, everyone is expected to work hard. Latham & Watkins left a positive impression all around!
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it completely! Definitely one of the more insightful schemes I have done- I would definitely recommend applying!
Yes
Definitely spend time on your application, tailor it to the firm and (most importantly!) to you! I would recommend reaching out to anyone you want to talk to at the firm too, they will be happy to meet you and answer any questions. Make sure you also know about the key deals of the frim and its culture.
