Overview
Each day had several talks/ insight sessions with members of G-Research. These were focused on finance, stats, programming and artificial intelligence. There was also a longer session dedicated to machine learning. In the evening there was social time and networking.
Skills
Yes! I learned a lot about machine learning, and the sessions were hands on, allowing me to develop my programming skills. I learnt more about Python packages and their use in statistics. It also gave me a greater insight into careers in the quantitative finance industry.
Business Insight
The week was very much focused on a role as a Quant researcher, and there were many opportunities to speak to staff from within the company about their positions and gain an insight into what they do on a daily basis. They were very friendly and helpful. There was also a question and answer panel.
Culture
Everyone at the insight week was very friendly and encouraging. The event was predominantly targeted at students doing Masters and PhDs, although there were some undergraduates there. The company itself seems very ambitious and competitive, although the working environment seems more relaxed.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the week, and G-Research did everything possible to make it a very pleasant experience. There were lots of opportunities for social time and other fun activities too!
Yes
Do as much problem-solving as possible! Knowledge of machine learning is helpful too, although not a necessity for this insight week.
