Overview
The role was largely focussed around economic analysis, such as writing policy papers where data derived from various sources. Given that this government department focusses on international relations and overseas development, these cross-cutting themes underpinned the majority of the work produced. On a day-to-day basis, there was a combination of short term asks with quick deadlines, and opportunities to work on longer term research projects.
Skills
This role relied quite heavily upon excel, so there was on-the-job learning to improve my excel skills. There was the opportunity to learn various forms of programming such as R, and I was exposed to many econometrics methods. Other skills such as verbal and written communication, teamwork and presentation were also improved.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility by feeding into economic projects, often taking the lead on key sections. The work that my manager would ask me to complete would sometimes be used higher up the command chain, such as the ministerial level, so it was important this was at a high quality level. Other small tasks, such as note-taking during meetings, were important to provide a summary of discussions for all participants.
Support & Guidance
My line manager prioritised my well-being, consistently monitoring my workload to ensure I was maintaining a healthy work lifestyle. It was clear what my expectations were as a placement economist, as the organisation consistently employs GES placement students. Other colleagues would take time to teach me new skills and offer useful feedback to a task.
Culture
I had a positive experience in the office, everyone was friendly and eager to make the experience as relaxing as possible. It is a tricky time to be a civil servant so sometimes this was reflected by low attitudes and pay disputes, but on the whole it was a positive atmosphere.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement as it gave me an insight into the role of a government economist, and connected myself with a variety of highly skilled colleagues. The team I was placed with and the work I undertook was always fulfilling, maintaining my interest across differing tasks. The experience of working in Westminster was exciting and definitely a privilege.
Yes
Revise your key economic concepts ahead of the interview, and also look at the civil servant competencies. Try to put yourself out of your comfort zone whilst on this placement, as you are well protected as a student by many people.
