Overview
I was part of a project in engine oils. I carried out lab work on a few specialist instruments to improve fundamental understanding. I presented my findings to the project group monthly. I spent about half my time in the lab, and the other half analysing data, making presentations, and in meetings.
Skills
I have learnt how to use a few specialist instruments. I have improved my skills working safely in a lab. I have improved my presentation and scientific communication skills. I have improved my scientific writing. I have learnt how to conduct myself in a working environment.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of ownership over the project I was working on and responsibility for the instruments I used. This was given slowly over the year with plenty of support initially.
Support & Guidance
A lot of support from my supervisor and others in the department. It was very easy to ask anyone for help. My supervisor was extremely supportive of all of my work, and was particularly helpful with work I had to submit to university.
Culture
The culture was great - everyone was very friendly and welcoming when I started and we’re always happy to help out. There were also great opportunities to socialise and do fun activities together in and outside of work.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the placement despite it being a very stressful year as I was doing uni work alongside working.
Yes
Research the different departments and how they differ as the different chemistry research areas are very different. I was very happy with my department as I wanted to focus on physical chemistry. Also be yourself in the interview process as there is a big focus on employing people that will fit the culture.
