Overview
Most teams works in hybrid, with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. The environment is pretty chill and everyone is friendly. The building has cafe room on every floor with 2 major restaurants. Most team including my works in sprint cycles, with daily stand-up and biweekly sprint retro and sprint planning. Ever day we work on the stories assigned to us and collaborate with other teammate if there is something we are not sure of. We have weekly 1:1 with our manager which is a really nice opportunity to learn where we could improve or do better.
Skills
I've used to work in Agile, after joining the team I learnt about sprint cycles. I also had a deeper understanding with springboots and testing tools. The firm promotes test-driven-development, which is something I never done before. It provide a really good opportunity to learn industry standard coding techniques and strategies. I also get to use a lot of technologies that I never used before, such as kubernetes and cloud computing, including the use of AWS S3, AWS Glue and AWS Lambda.
Responsibilities
I've been given same responsibility as other full-time employees. We are responsible to finish our stories in a timely manner, but there is no need to rush over. We can always talk with manager regarding anything we are not sure of. Sprint story points can always be changed if unexpected thing happens. With daily-stand up we are given opportunities to learn what others are doing and allow as to express any blockers we faced, so other teammate might help us solve it.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance, not only from manager but also my teammates, the hrs and other peers. Everyone is super friendly and approachable, we are free to raise any concerns to them, and they will always provide as much support as they could. During weekly 1:1, I'm able to ask any question about the project or about any technologies that I'm not sure of, my manager will always explain them to me and inspires me.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere here at JP Morgan is absolutely amazing. Everyone is friendly, approachable and helpful. We are free to express our thoughts to each other and everyone here respects each other. People here treat work as a part of their life, we are free to move around and we can leave the office on time, there is no pressure on us at all, we just need to do our best. There isn't a strict restriction of lunch time, we can chat with our friends freely or do some activities.
Your Impressions
I absolutely enjoy my internship. I've learnt a lot of things that I didn't even get a chance to know when I was in Uni. The work style here is really different compare to how I did coursework at Uni. Here people in a team are more united and care about each other. We actively depend on our teammates to accomplish the task. I learnt a lot of valuable skills including communication, collaboration, etc.
Yes
My only advise is be yourself, try your best and everything will be fine. Here we get to express our true selves. Don't afraid to ask questions, everyone have been through this stage and it's totally fine to not knowing everything. We only learn by ask. Other people's advise or opinion would often inspire you about your decision. Another important thing is networking, here you'll get to know people that you wouldn't expected to know.
