Overview
Working on implementation of new features using various cs languages. I work either alone or with other teammates. After the first draft of the code is done, refactoring is required and at last testing is also done. My work then goes through multiple reviews before getting accepted. If there are any issues, I am made aware of it and I fix it (with help of senior if I am unable to do so by myself)
Skills
Yes, I have improved my communication, teamwork, coding and problem-solving skills. Unlike in uni where I did used to easily give up if unable to solve a problem, at work I push myself and use different resources provided online or talk to colleagues/seniors to get help.
Responsibilities
Compared to what I was expecting, yes, I have been given much responsibility. However, we were also provided training before actually been any task to do alone.
Support & Guidance
A lot. I can talk to anyone in the office and get help. I have approached many people in various departments for help in my coding or even to just chat about advice and guidance and never has anyone refused to talk to me. We were also provided with mentors to help us throughout the internship journey.
Culture
It is very relaxed and calm compared to perhaps other banks. It isn't a high-stress environment like many may believe. Everyone has some sort of task that keeps them busy but also enough time to do other stuff i.e.. lunch breaks, team lunches, participating in socials organized by various teas, participating in talks/sessions from seniors all around the world etc.
Your Impressions
I am enjoying it a lot and without doubt I will try my hardest to come back here for another role in the future. Compared to my peers in other companies, I have no complaints so far and I am 100% to want to come back for a more of a long-term role. I don't want to work here only for a few years, but rather scale up and climb the ladder and stay within the company for 10+years.
Yes
To not overthink and remained relaxed during the application process. Soft skills are definitely important and useful so don't underestimate them! Teamwork and communication in CS is absolutely essential!
