Overview
In the first week all the interns had a country wide training program, teaching us about the company and the different trainings we could potentially do such as corporate responsibility (charity events and work), EY badges - these can lead to a masters in a particular area you are interested in and any work related sports teams/society's we could join. From the second week we were put into our appropriate service lines and into our teams for the rest of the internship. We were then given tasks to do to help our team on real life projects and coaching from our team members to help us. We can join in with team meetings, service wide meetings and office social activity's so that we can get to know people within the office.
Skills
During my internship I have developed skills such as teamwork, presentation and excel skills. As we are placed in a group from the second week, you are part of a team who are very supportive and helpful. This grew my confidence in speaking out about anything I did not understand, from the acronyms everybody uses to new software's and technology's I was not used to working with. Every piece of work I have completed is on an excel file therefore, I very quickly learnt how to navigate this software, we also received training on it to help integrate us into the working place.
Responsibilities
During the internship we got to work on real life projects with clients. We worked along side one of the people in our team during each task we were given so that they could provide coaching if and when we needed it. Our work was then reviewed by somebody on the team and potentially sent out to clients. Therefore, we were given more responsibility and freedom than I thought we would which boosted the amount of knowledge I have learned from this experience.
Support & Guidance
You could receive as much or as little support as you needed, all you needed to do was ask. If I was stuck on anything or was interested about something else I could ask my buddy, my councilor, anybody on my team or anybody in the office really as everybody was so friendly and very happy to help. Their favorite phrase was 'No question is a silly question.' which was made very clear right from the start.
Culture
The company culture was a very supportive in an inclusive environment. There was no belittling of anybody, for example, the partners and seniors managers would come up to you to ask if you needed any help or guidance with anything or ask them any questions so everybody is appreciated and treated as an equal which is an amazing culture to work in as it is very supportive and allows teams to really grow and develop together.
Your Impressions
At the beginning I was very nervous as I had not previously worked or been in an office environment, let alone worked within a financial sector as I study Physics with Astronomy at university. However, as soon as I met all the interns and our buddy's I was very excited as everybody was very nice and inclusive and we all came from completely different backgrounds. I have carried on enjoying every moment since and I am sure I will do up until I finish my internship.
Yes
Just to give it a go. The amount of opportunities and experiences I have just had in three weeks so far has been incredible, from working on real life projects to sitting in on firm wide meetings, I have enjoyed every second of it and I would 100% do it again within a heart beat. Yes, some times may be unnerving if you have never been in situations like it before, however, there is not a more inclusive, supportive environment to do it in like there is at EY.
