    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was a member of the global compliance & reporting team and responsible for completing tax computation work on the OneSource software. My daily tasks were heavily determined on who I asked for work from so quite varied on the day to day. There were some days where I had to call and send letters to HMRC and others where I formatted Excel documents for client questionnaires and scopes of entities to make it clearer to see all the sections.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a plethora of new skills; specifically relating to certain practical things such as how to use the actual OCT and Beehive software that is quite EY specific. During my internship I had to do two presentations; one on my own to a group of L1/2 and one as a group to our counsellors. Both these opportunities helped me enhance my presentation skills which helped me develop my confidence in my tax knowledge.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a sufficient amount of responsibility I thought as there were certain tasks that I was encouraged to lead myself including the CSR project and the group presentations and also parts of a project that I was assigned to do for the initial proposal stage of a potential new client. I was given tasks and allowed to get on with them by myself which gave me a sense of responsibility with everyone encouraging me to ask questions which allowed me to feel at ease.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyone in the team was so supportive and available to answer any questions I had. I also felt supported by my assigned buddy during the 3/4 weeks she was here for as she helped me find work from people and was never too busy to help me complete tasks which i had been asked to do. My counsellor was very helpful during my preparation for the presentation and set up several meetings with me in the lead-up to ensure I was prepared.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general atmosphere was extremely positive and I felt very comfortable in the office and around everyone. When I first arrived I thought the imposter syndrome would be overwhelming but I have felt very welcomed by everyone and it has made me feel comfortable here. Hearing all the talks in the induction period made me feel like EY's values all aligned with mine which was very encouraging when thinking about the company's culture.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship here and felt the work really suited my interested, it made me feel a lot more confident in my tax competency and I feel like I have learnt a lot in my short time here. The other networking events and sessions put on by EY have also helped me learn a lot more about the company and individual experiences which I have found helpful in determining whether this place is for me.

  • 7. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • I would say be open to trying everything and never be afraid to ask questions because everyone is so helpful and willing to answer. Don't think you are asking stupid questions because everyone was once in your position so no one is going to judge you for not knowing something that you have never done before. Go in with an open mind because you never know what to expect so be open to trying new things.
