Overview
As a Through Life Engineer which operates from within our Safety and TLE team, I was involved in reliability tasks for safety critical systems in civil and military aviation platforms. I gained experience of providing RM&T support in the engineering domain, solving technical problems, in collaboration with other engineering functions. This means interacting and working on problems with Systems and Hardware engineers, as well as some interaction with customer representatives.
Skills
Throughout my time at GE, I gained a huge insight into the industry, what it means to work in an engineering team in industry and also developed technical knowledge I didn't previously have at university. Coming from Aeronautical Engineering, I had a good overview of a variety of engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, materials and control engineering. However, my placement gave me a deeper dive into the hardware and systems of aviation systems.
Responsibilities
Once confidence had been established from earlier projects, I was given opportunities to take on leadership roles on project deliverables from our department. This meant I was given responsibility to manage timeline and provide updates to project managers - improving my confidence on having responsibilities of projects in industry. I also had the opportunity to present new tools to the department and beyond; this came from being given the responsibility and opportunity to explore improvements.
Support & Guidance
Despite the workload of the department when I initially joined, I received great support in settling into the company and my role. By being able to ask questions and ask for support, it allowed me to get up to speed quickly and begin adding value to the department. I also received wider support from the Early Careers team on regular Placement Calls where we discussed different volunteering opportunities and ways to work better.
Culture
I experienced a very positive atmosphere where a culture of learning and growth is encouraged. I experienced this in general work but also saw the different opportunities for growth in volunteering and training opportunities. The site also regularly engaged in "Power and Controls Learning Zone" Teams calls where different engineering disciplines were discussed so employees could see how their roles fit in to the wider picture, that is GE.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with GE, a company with such a positive learning culture. I'm glad to have started my early career with GE.
