Overview
Week 1 of the 4-week summer vacation scheme consisted of trainings, inductions and up-skillings, some of which general soft skills in a working environment, and towards the end of the first week we delved deeper into the Audit IT Specialist department and the work that the team does. The following 3 weeks included weekly rotations onto clients within different industries. Client work would include joining walk-through and team update meetings, documentation tasks, research and analysis tasks, using Excel and other relevant software. Throughout the scheme, we carried out individual research projects and presented our findings to senior management during the final week. There was also a volunteering opportunity, which entailed a presentation to Year 12 students at a local school regarding managing finances as a student.
Skills
I have developed many skills having spending each day in a professional working environment. Soft skills include the ability to network and communicate effectively, presentation skills, and my speed and use of Excel shortcuts has further advanced across the scheme. I have also gained technical knowledge about a range of IT elements and software.
Responsibilities
I have been given an appropriate amount of responsibility during the internship - more than I would have expected initially. I have been given meaningful work contributing to the bigger-picture audits of a number of clients. It was also a great opportunity to be able to present to a Partner, Director and Senior Manager during the last week.
Support & Guidance
There was a lot of support and guidance offered, firstly by my buddy who was a Senior Associate. Each intern is also assigned a People Leader who helps track progress against the objectives set during week 1. Each week's client rotation allows a line manager to report into for that week. There are also many wellbeing services offered at the company, including a 'retreat' room for mindfulness, Headspace subscription, and a weekly mindfulness newsletter.
Culture
The company culture and feel was super friendly and everyone was a lot more approachable and willing to help than what I had anticipated before joining, no matter which level of the business they are at. There are many networks for different cultural groups which are super welcoming, and generally it feels like the business does care for wellbeing. Volunteering opportunities are also heavily encouraged.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and feel that Deloitte is a very well-rounded company. I have been given a variety of opportunities and responsibilities that I don't think I could've got at a different company.
