The Role
Really varied and interesting. I analysed a range of samples during my time on placement from both in vivo and in vitro studies using LC-MS/MS. I was also involved in preparing paperwork for the studies and writing up results.
Quite valued, I felt like my colleagues appreciated that I made an effort to meet deadlines.
Really good training at the beginning of the year and my supervisor was always on hand if I had any questions about work or if I needed advice. Felt like management were very approachable.
I had plenty to keep busy but didn't feel overloaded. Generally, I'd spend most of the day in the lab and spend a few hours writing up.
I felt I was given quite a high level of responsibility and felt like my results really made a difference to programmes within the company. Sometimes I felt slightly under pressure due to the level of responsibility.
Definitely developed skills I can make use of in the lab, back at uni and hopefully in a future job. Very rewarding experience and confirmed that I enjoy the practical side of the work I've been studying at uni.
The Company
Everybody was really friendly and we had a few laughs, especially on a Friday afternoon. Plenty of excuses for coffee and cake breaks.
Very well, the company had taken on students for a number of years and there was excellent training in place and even a few chances to attend lectures set up for the students at my site to learn more about the area we were working in.
I felt like I got all the training I needed to complete my job.
Flexi Time
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Some people left my department during my placement year and it does not seem like a very dependable job due to reshuffling of roles. However, I believe the company is aiming to recruit a greater number of graduates in the future and they do offer a graduate programme.
The Culture
There were over 100 placement students at my site so very good social scene.
Average.
Not great (only one pretty awful nightclub) but it was only half an hour from London on the train so couldn't complain!
There were a few events organized.
