    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assisting an audit team with tasks to help in completing the half year and end of year audits for 2 financial institutions. Often utilising excel to perform the foundations of the key audit processes, as well as engaging with clients through walkthrough meetings and emails. Utilising the company's virtual platform to arrange documents and establish the basis of tasks through a task manager.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Developed my excel skills massively, with the firm providing many resources to enable me to learn and develop in this regard. Improved team-working skills- working in a range of teams with a range of individuals.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At first, I had minimal responsibility, which is to be expected for a new-joining intern. However, I felt like after a week or so, I began to approach more difficult tasks which contributed more significantly to the team. I also engaged with a few clients, which felt like I had a responsibility in representing the firm well.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was very pleased with the amount of support that I received within my team. For most of the time, I was able to instantly discuss any questions or problems that I had with a senior member of the team, who would almost always be able to instantly help. There was a few difficulties with technology and admin at the beginning, which I found very difficult to resolve and the support I provided was reasonably ineffective at first, but we did eventually solve the problems.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everybody in the office was extremely friendly and helpful if I ever had any queries. The office environment was very different to what I expected- there was more relaxed than I expected, with a 'dress for your day' policy which allowed you to be more comfortable with what you wore. I genuinely really enjoyed the experience and the environment which I worked in.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time at EY. The environment that you work in is extremely important for your productivity at your job and I believe that the EY environment is top class. I would have liked to receive a bit more work over my time, as I felt that at times I was a little unproductive and had no tasks to complete, but I understand there is limited work an intern can do.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • When applying, make sure you understand the business and the role you are applying for. Although I was applying for just an internship, it is important that you don't apply to a job which you are clueless about, as I feel that you may be very disappointed by the reality. I would definitely apply to EY for an internship because it provides a much more comforting experience to the classic Big 4 expectation.
