Overview
My role as a civil service economist is to assist government in providing economic analysis for policy. On a day to day basis, I conduct economic analysis through research of data sources and modelling, usually on excel. The role also involves conveying ideas and results to colleagues who may not be economists.
Skills
I have developed skills in microsoft excel, as well as written skills, communication and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities
I was given significant responsibility during my placement, though I'm aware that your level of responsibility depends largely on your team/ manager. For myself, I was trusted to communicate with senior colleagues and colleagues from outside of my department on a regular basis. My economic analysis was trusted and I was given the opportunity to write up important documents largely solo.
Support & Guidance
There are multiple support/ buddy/ mentorship schemes within the civil service which can help build relationships in the office. They are also useful in having someone to talk to about work-related issues besides from your manager. Aside from these schemes, I felt that I could ask for support and guidance from anyone in my team.
Culture
We are expected to go in the office 40% of the time (usually 2 days a week). On these days, there is a fairly social atmosphere where colleagues tend to meet up outside of work hours.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement year greatly. I felt it was a good blend of social activities, challenging work and responsibility in work. The work-life balance is very good and I'd rarely work beyond hours. The work was always varied & interesting.
Yes
Research the Civil Service behaviours and duplicate these in your interview/ application answers. Be sociable when you begin work and don't be afraid to talk to your colleagues.
