    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was working on analysis of aroma compounds at the lab for the most part of my placement. People from different departments at BAT were in my panel so by the end of my placement I had a good understanding of how the thins are functioning in the company. After lab-based work I analysed the data using statistical tools. Lab based work involved knowledge of flavour and analytical chemistry. Sometimes my colleagues asked me for help with their projects. In such cases the tasks were great explained, and it never took a while. Overall, it was a great experience.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have significantly improved laboratory technical and problem-solving skills. Being a Study Leader for my project, I have boosted leadership and personal soft skills. Also, company provided statistical training, Python Data Science training and Leadership training. All of them helped me a lot during my placement. I have learnt how to present both scientific and business orientated presentations to people with different backgrounds and positions within the company. Besides, I have developed speechmaking skills by presenting poster and presentation about my project to around 50-60 people.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I had a lot of responsibilities. For 4 month of active phase of my project I prepared new samples every 48 hours at the lab. Also, I have completed 6 to14 sensory panel sessions every day during that time. I was a Study Leader for my project, so I needed to organise and run the whole study by myself with a big help from my line manager. I needed to pay attention to every small detail I was doing just the same as in any other scientific related job.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Although, I had an individual project, my Team always supported me when I raised for help to them. My line manager was the person who always supported me when I needed. It would be very hard to complete my project without his help. People at BAT are extremely friendly and always happy to help. During my placement I asked people from other departments for help few times and they helped me pretty quickly. Also, for each placement student there was a mentor assigned. He helped me a lot when I needed a side view on my presentations.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • To a very great extent. During my placement I was able to significantly increase science related skills. I have applied materials that I studied at university in real life and had an opportunity to understand whether scientific related job suits me. I always was well supported by my team, line manager, university and other interns. Besides, Southampton is a really good place to live in, where you can practice your hobbies and/or sports. Night life is also good. Area around Southampton includes a big forest and a coastline with numerous beautiful places for day out of the city.
