Overview
As a Systems Test Engineer your primary job role is to test the the software the runs on our SMT printers before the software is released to customers. The main responsibility is to find bugs with the software before the customers find them and then report them on the defect management server. Job involves mostly manual software testing, sometimes a bit of hardware testing is also involved.
Skills
I have greatly improved my time management and problem solving skills, as finding bugs requires a lot of investigation. Working in a large company will naturally improve your communication skills and your commercial awareness. I improved my programming skills as part of a individual project I completed, I suggested this project to my manager and it was approved for me to work on.
Responsibilities
I was a Junior Engineer within the department and within a couple of months I had the exact same responsibilities as everyone else within my department.
Support & Guidance
I got as much support and guidance as I wanted. If I wanted more support this would have been given, if I wanted less support this also would have been possible
Culture
Everyone at the company is very friendly and approachable and after the major office renovation, the office atmosphere is very good
Your Impressions
I enjoyed that I was able to take the placement in any direction that I wanted to. I had the trust of my manager so was able to freely criticize or suggest changes within internal processes and these were usually listened to and these changes would be implemented. I learnt a lot about what it is like to work in a large company, and gained a lot of commercial awareness and improved my soft skills greatly.
Yes
Do some basic research into the SMT segment and show some commercial awareness.
