Overview
As part of the internship, I was doing the same work as the trainees: doc review, proofreading, bibling, company searches, research and market analysis, drafting notes/memos for clients, liaising with clients, partners, and opposing and local counsel.
Skills
Using tech to work faster and smarter. Managing my time in a way that prioritises billable client work. Carefully wording emails to ensure advice or tone are as correct, prudent, and professional as possible.
Business Insight
At the academy, the only outcomes are you are offered a training contract (TC) or you are not offered a TC. Consequently, the role of trainee was the focus of the experience. The academy definitely gave me a good idea of what it would be like to be a trainee at CMS.
Culture
CMS is a really lovely culture. People from the security and canteen staff up to the partners are personable and approachable. Obviously, you do have to time your approach with a pattern properly because they are busy, but with good communication or just trying to catch them during a free minute, I found CMS partners would make time for vac schemers. Can recommend 10/10.
Your Impressions
Loved it. Sad I had to leave after 3 weeks, but hopefully I’ll be going back as a trainee!

Applying for a vacation scheme or training contract at any firm can be challenging (and even maddening at times). Make sure your application is perfect. Don’t give them an excuse to reject you because of a typo. And know the firm and their work so that you can clearly and authentically say why you want to work there. Good advice for any firm, including CMS.
