Overview
My roles involves learning about the technology my team uses, attending team meetings, working on given assignments such as implementing new feature, expanding tests, refactoring etc. It also involves attending sessions focused on refreshing knowledge on some specific programming language/framework, networking with other people within the Business Resource Groups, and more.
Skills
I've learned about BDD and a new framework - Java Cucumber, learned about Kafka and Embedded Kafka, and developed my existing skills in Java Spring. I've also improved my communication and team collaboration.
Responsibilities
Yes. Being part of the team that works with transactions is big responsibility on its own, so additionally working on testing and ensuring systems communicate without any problems is very important.
Support & Guidance
I've received support from my manager and team members on a daily basis, especially when I was just starting my internship.
Culture
Work-life balance is highly emphasised. There are lots of networking events and communication is appreciated. Tech stack is up-to-date and people generally feel happy here. There are lots of people who've been working in the company for over 5-10 years.
Your Impressions
I've really enjoyed my internship from the beginning. There are many opportunities to meet other interns and we've had many events. I learned a new framework and expanded my knowledge. Furthermore, I've gained more work experience that will be of high importance throughout my career.
Yes
Be open-minded and focus on general software engineering knowledge rather than specific language/framework. Have an understanding of things learned at university (such as databases, security etc.). Look for opportunities outside the university (such as JPMC programmes on The Forage, personal projects that are preferably focused on finance/banking).
