Overview
My role as a project controls assistant within the PMO (Project and Programme Management Office) involved supporting project managers in tracking and monitoring the progress of the project against key variables such as schedule, cost, quality, scope, risk and resources. My work mainly involved assisting Project and Project Controls Managers with their day-to-day tasks and attending weekly team meetings to review documents and monitor the progress of various aspects of the project. Overall, I gained lots of insights on the purpose, benefits, and impact of the PMO.
Skills
My 10-week project controls internship with Mace allowed me to develop efficient management and decision-making skills which will definitely complement my university studies. In addition, I had the opportunity to improve my interpersonal skills and gain a broader understanding of the different sectors within PMO by interacting with interesting, motivated and proactive professionals across various departments. I also greatly improved my organisational and technical skills through an extensive use of Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook.
Responsibilities
As a summer intern, I was given little responsibility due to working at Mace for a short period of time. Most tasks I engaged with were aimed towards my personal growth and to familiarise myself with the environment and processes carried out in a global consultancy. However, I was responsible for delivering my day to day tasks on time and aiming for the best possible outcome. I was also given multiple opportunities to communicate with colleagues working across various sectors within the project.
Support & Guidance
I had the privilege of being constantly supported by my line manager, project team members, buddy, and the organisation's Emerging Talent Team. My line manager provided me with lots of guidance and had regular catch up meetings with me to discuss my progress and tasks I was working on. I felt welcome in the team from the first day and all team members were open to answer any questions I had and provide me with all the necessary resources to familiarise myself with the project.
Culture
The general atmosphere was very friendly and supportive. By reaching out to colleagues from various departments, I found that everyone was happy to dedicate some time for a discussion to share knowledge and exchange ideas. I also had the chance to attend social and company-wide events. In addition, there are various employee networks to get involved with including Women at Mace, Pride at Mace, Parents at Mace, Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion, Enabled at Mace and Mace Military.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with Mace, especially getting the opportunity to expand my network and build professional contacts within a group of likeminded people which will certainly boost my future career. Another aspect I really appreciated was the company culture and supportive environment. In addition, hybrid working definitely supported an improved work-life balance. Overall, my placement was highly rewarding, offering great exposure to large-scale projects. I gained lots of valuable insights into various departments within the consultancy and construction industry.
Yes
I would definitely recommend applying to Mace to other prospective student interns as it offers a unique opportunity to gain essential soft and practical skills, as well as project exposure that would be a great asset towards a career in a global consultancy. I would also advise prospective interns to ask lots of questions and actively seek opportunities to interact with colleagues from various departments and get involved in a broad range of activities. In this way, a wider understanding of Mace's different sectors and roles can be formed.
