Overview
My role consisted of shadowing managers and associates for the two projects I was working on. I was first introduced to the other members of my team who gave me an overview of the project before being given demonstrations and set tasks to complete such as formatting presentations and creating and summarising reports. I also was proactive in networking with staff in other lines of service to find out more about their time at the company. Towards the end of the internship, I asked for and received feedback on my performance.
Skills
One of the main skills I have learnt is networking. From networking with the other interns in my cohort to having informal career conversations with partners at the firm, I have developed the skill of getting to know and form relationships with people in different fields and from different backgrounds. I have also learned how to work collaboratively by valuing and considering the perspectives of others, especially from working on an intern group presentation throughout my time here.
Responsibilities
I was given a fair amount of responsibility taking into account the internship was only 4 weeks. I had the privilege of shadowing client calls, working with managers and having an input tasks which went on to be presented to stakeholders and clients. I was given more responsibility during the intern team presentation on the side where we had the opportunity to speak to a client we were working with directly and ask questions as well as having to create this presentation as a group without my guidance.
Support & Guidance
I received plenty of support and guidance throughout my internship. Rarely would the managers I was shadowing leave me without any set tasks to complete which helped to keep me busy throughout. I was able to set goals at the beginning of the internship and have meetings to support me in achieving these and I also received feedback on my performance towards the end of the internship that will benefit my professional development and skillset for the future.
Culture
Very relaxed and warm atmosphere. Everyone from my team members to members of other teams and different lines of services were welcoming and friendly. I was able to schedule informal coffee chats to get to know and network with various staff across all levels from Associate to Partner and they all made me feel welcome and a part of the team. I also had the opportunity to work from home at times and the Friday summer working hours were definitely a plus!
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship to a large extent. Although I would have preferred it to be a bit longer, I have learned so much in the space of 4 weeks. From technical skills such as formatting, presenting and utilising data to softer skills such as networking and building relationships, this has definitely improved my professional development. It was also great to have been out on a volunteering day with the other interns and make a positive environmental impact in the community, even as an intern.
Yes
I would say be open-minded and don't keep your decision to work in a particular line of service or business unit set in stone, there are plenty of opportunities here and you can move around to develop your professional skillset and network. I would also encourage you to seize every opportunity with a positive attitude because you never know what you might learn or who you may end up meeting and the impact it can have on your future career.
