Overview
Being an intern primarily involved assisting the more senior members of the team in daily tasks to learn more about the audit process. These tasks have ranged from basic admin to more complex tests of a client's financials depending on the engagement. In AWM, clients have been a range of financial entities with vastly different structures underpinning them. Being an intern has allowed us to explore how these clients are structures and how the team goes about auditing them.
Skills
I have learnt a number of skills throughout this experience. First and foremost has been technical skills involving auditing. This includes the technological aspect of using new softwares for the engagement as well as understanding the process of an audit and how testing takes place. Organisation and time management has also been key to this internship, managing tasks assigned and their deadlines to produce deliverables on time and at a high enough standard for the engagement.
Responsibilities
The amount of responsibility given has varied depending on the senior colleagues in the team. The beginning of the week was mostly admin tasks and basic introductions to the process to learn more about what is involved. By the final week, I was entrusted with more complex tasks including conducting simple financial tests without assistance and contacting clients for further information. This was a nice step up throughout the month but the level of responsibility was expected to increase.
Support & Guidance
There was plenty of support and guidance throughout the month. More junior colleagues in the office, primarily associates and senior associates, were more than happy to help with any questions we had about the process or mundane tasks. I also had a training week prior to being in the office which gave a theoretical overview of basic skills and the work involved for the internship. More senior members of staff were also very good about assisting where needed
Culture
The company culture has been very supportive and friendly. The average age in the office is fairly young, made up primarily of associates and senior associates. As a result, there are frequent socials for everyone, a relaxed atmosphere for work and attitude (dress code etc.), and many others who have been friendly and happy to help with questions. Provided work is completed to a high standard and on time, the way we go about doing so is left up to us.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working for PwC. The atmosphere around the office is extremely friendly and nice to work at. The people have been willing to help at every turn and sociable at all times. I have received work which has felt engaging and involved in the overall process, providing us ownership and responsibility over processes which is rare for an internship. The intern events were online and so could've been more engaging, but the office itself has been enjoyable to work in.
Yes
PwC does require a very high standard of work and a fast learning ability, displayed in the aptitude tests involved in the process. However, if you feel you meet this, the common theme among successful applicants have been their social skills. Everyone is extremely sociable and talkative, willing to get involved with events and meet new people at every point. This is reflected in the relaxed office atmosphere and frequent social activities. If you meet these 2 main requirements then PwC will be a great company to apply for.
