    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Planning intern for structures, controls and facilities in the assembly building - daily work involved attending planning meetings for individual projects, organizing projects with planners and carrying out related tasks for them. Additionally, worked towards plant shutdowns where the major projects were carried out, helping to organize and manage the smooth operation of the shutdown.

  • Learnt significant project management skills and developed an understanding of complex industry project management processes. Learnt how the automotive production industry functions. Developed team working skills relevant to engineering and developed better presentation skills. Further developed confidence in communicating with colleagues of various levels and external suppliers.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I feel that I was given responsibility in my placement without the concern for liability. On several projects I was required to communicate with suppliers independently about project requirements, obtaining quotes, and helping them around the site. I feel that the responsibility I had gave me room for personal development without ever being too much pressure.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a 2 week handover from the past interns to support me transitioning into my new role which was very helpful for me to settle in. After this I received support from the team on any queries I had and was generally well supported. Some colleagues endeavored to support me more and make sure I was gaining valuable experience and having work to do.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was very relaxed while being very structured and efficiently run. Most people were very encouraging with work and understanding towards my lack of experience in the industry, willing to offer their help. The company was very inclusive towards me in making sure I was able to gain a good wider understanding of the industry.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year, meeting lots of people and learning about their roles and careers in engineering. Working in an automotive assembly hall was a great experience where it felt like there was something new to learn or see every day and I was able to learn a lot about the industry as a whole.
