Overview
I was placed in two teams for one week each, and whilst in those teams I completed trainee-level tasks such as proof reading, document drafting, legal research and writing summaries for clients. I was also invited to attend client meetings and a client drinks event. Outside of my departments, we also had presentations from other areas of the firm such as CSR, personal branding, the trainee business blog committee and some associates on developing areas of the law such as crypto and cybersecurity. We were also given numerous opportunities to network with partners and associates from departments around the firm.
Skills
I have developed my legal research skills, drafting skills, client and colleague communication skills and my understanding of the work done by the two departments I was sat in.
Business Insight
I felt we were given a very comprehensive overview of all aspects of the firm to be as informed as possible when making the decision on whether to accept a training contract with RPC. We were given presentations from and opportunities to speak with lawyers and support staff at a variety of levels from trainee to partner, which helped to give a wide range of perspectives about what it’s like working at the firm.
Culture
Everyone at the firm was very welcoming and willing to answer any and all questions. I immediately felt comfortable chatting with my supervisors and trainee buddies about not just work but also getting to know them a bit more. I felt very supported throughout the whole experience by both of my teams.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my time at RPC and as such chose them to continue my legal journey with as a trainee solicitor. I felt like my work made genuine contribution to my teams, and I was given ample opportunities to speak with people from the other departments I was interested in.
Yes
The firm really values individual authenticity, so be confident in being yourself throughout the entire process. Don’t be afraid to chat to people about non-work things - they’re looking for people skills as much as they are legal skills. Take the time to understand the work the firm does, but also come with questions! Figure out what is important to you in the TC decision, and ask questions that will help with that.
