    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am fully integrated into one of the teams and have been given a challenging task to complete, involving python which I requested. I have a daily standup with the team to discuss our work plans for the day. I spend the majority of the day working on this. The rest of the time I spend working on team business project, shadowing other roles, meeting other grads/interns or learning a new skill online.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have greatly improved time management, I have a lot of tasks to do, I learned how to efficiently prioritise tasks so I complete everything on time. My python skills have developed greatly too. Being the first time I have real world experience, it brought a host of challenges I could never foresee at university, I learned new applications of coding as well. On top of this, my teamwork improved greatly.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given responsibility, I was given a task which takes a while to complete, I wasn't told what to do and was given freedom as to how I should balance my time between this and other tasks. I was given responsibilities to arrange meetings with other colleagues to help me, I was not spoon fed which was really valuable, it helped me integrate into the team and feel like a real worker.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I have a lot of support and guidance. Initially, there was confusion about what to do as we had an induction day but we werent told what exactly we should do after or when we would expect work to do which was confusing. However once settled, everyone was willing to help even if they werent in your team and I felt i could always ask for help if needed

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was amazing. I expected a bank to be high stress, unfriendly and very hierarchal. This was the polar opposite. Amazing work environment, people are really friendly and willing to help. They really care about your well being and dont expect you to work like a robot. They also give you time to develop skills and even volunteer. Overall great company to work for and they obviously see their employees as their most valuable asset.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed it a lot, I got stuck into challenging work and enjoyed working in a team for the business project. I also enjoyed meeting all the people I did and getting the opportunity to reach out to anyone and shadow them to learn about different roles within the company. I enjoyed being able to set aside time to learn skills. I also enjoyed spending a day volunteering at a local charity.

  • 7. Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group
  • They are big on peoples values rather than what you know. Make sure you know the CPC's and have examples of how you have shown them in your studies or previous experience etc. When you have the technical task, don't overcomplicate it, just explain your thought process clearly and link everything you do to the banks purpose such as sustainability etc.
