Overview
The SPARK Scheme is a five-day insight programme for students in either their first year of a three-year degree or their second year of a four-year degree. Every day featured at least one presentation, workshop or panel on topics ranging from ESG considerations to a deep dive into the Global Financial Markets practice area and Clifford Chance's pro bono initiatives. Moreover, every participant was assigned a Trainee Buddy and an Associate Supervisor as their first points of contact. Everyone spent the week in the relevant practice area so every experience was innately different.
Skills
Over the duration of Clifford Chance's SPARK scheme, I learned and developed a number of skills. On the one hand, I learned vital industry-specific skills like effectively analysing a contract and understanding how to navigate larger files, utilising the firm's software and grasping how the due diligence process is conducted. On the other hand, I greatly developed a number of already existing skills like communicating in a professional environment, feedback incorporation, effective research and commercial awareness.
Business Insight
Transparency is a priority for Clifford Chance so it was easy getting to know how the business operates. The firm's online presence paints a comprehensive picture of its operations, the deals it handles and how its employees' day-to-day looks like. Information about the potential roles available is effectively spread by the Early Talent Team through social media, various events and the firm's website. Inquiries are always welcome and the Early Talent Team strives to respond promptly with accurate and helpful information.
Culture
Clifford Chance's culture is one of its main differentiating factors. As a first-year student I got the chance to speak to people of various seniorities -- from trainees to senior partners. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and I always felt like a part of the team. Moreover, my Trainee Buddy and Associate Supervisor were always open for questions or a chat no matter how busy they were. Overall, the general atmosphere of the office is warm and friendly.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight that the SPARK scheme gave me -- both personally and professionally. On a personal level, the networking opportunities with my peers, lawyers, the Early Talent Team and professionals from other organisations like Rare Recruitment were incredibly enriching. On a professional level, the industry-specific skills I learned and the first-hand insight that I gathered will undoubtedly assist me in my future career development. It was an incredibly enjoyable and insightful experience throughout.
Yes
Clifford Chance has an elaborate application process. First, it is vital to practice the Watson Glaser test in order to score well. Second, one must perfect the online application form by making sure the answers are carefully tailored to Clifford Chance and there are no grammar and spelling mistakes. Third, the Assessment Centre consisting of two 45-minute interviews requires solid commercial awareness and interpersonal skills. Practicing how to communicate answers well and being confident will go a long way.
