Overview
I mainly assisted on an ongoing Technology Consulting project for one of PwC's clients. It mainly involved Data Mapping tasks and contributing towards the upkeep of the data model for the project. I attended daily meetings with the project team and assisted with tasks that could help make a bit more progress on the project. These were tasks that sat across various subteams and I communicated with them constantly to receive more tasks/provide updates on existing tasks. When I wasn't working on the project, I spent time completing some training courses in Microsoft Azure and Power BI or networking with other employees at PwC.
Skills
I've learnt a bit more about DevOps and Data Visualisation as well as Data Architecture through the internship. I also think my networking skills have improved drastically. I now have a clearer understanding of the importance of networking and branding yourself and this was all achieved through practice. I built a lot of confidence through the project as my team members created an inclusive environment in which I could share ideas despite being one of the youngest members by experience on the team.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was given some fairly new tasks to do but with independence and support to complete it with confidence and not feel any sense of micromanagement. I believe that other interns I had met during the internship were given a lot of responsibility for crucial tasks and some of them even managed parts of projects which led me to feel confident about the firm's approach to dividing tasks and responsibilities to ensure that their employees feel empowered without causing disruption in work flow and the quality of work produced.
Support & Guidance
I had a career coach and a buddy who were able to help me at any point that I needed their support as an intern. As a team member, the more senior members on the team were quick to respond to any questions I had and were constantly reaffirming my work and providing feedback that could help me identify areas to improve on or areas to focus on doing well. I found that in general, employees at the firm were ready to have chats with me about their work which gave me a better understanding of the work that goes on at the firm.
Culture
The employees were lovely to have a chat with. The work environment at my office seemed friendly and calm and never once hostile. People were very polite and welcoming with the interns and spoke to us about anything we could ask them for. Moreover, the office I was at was spread across multiple floors and it seemed like each floor had its own atmosphere (all were lovely!) and I found that the firm's values aligned deeply with my own personal values of integrity and collaboration.
Your Impressions
I mostly enjoyed the internship! The other interns were at times a bit difficult to communicate with so this didn't leave the greatest impact from a social point of view. However, I enjoyed working on my project, going into the office often in the week and speaking to other employees at the firm. I found that they were able to welcome us in ways that made me look forward to the internship each morning.
Yes
Be yourself. PwC values what YOU bring to the table. They are amazing at providing training opportunities that support your professional development and are keen to support you in any way they possibly can. They are an excellent firm in terms of prioritising their employees and their flexible working policies (go Summer Working hours!!!) are reflective of how they can bring out the best of their employees by supporting them. I have hardly come across firms that prioritise our professional growth in the same ways that PwC does.
