    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked with a client to develop their new e-commerce site, I had to attend agile ceremonies like stand-ups, retrospectives and showcases with my team most of the time. I was also able to work closely with the client most days of the week at their office to discuss and work collaboratively. Outside of project work I actively helped run and manage the internal communications inside my practise, compiling news and updates and sharing them on our internal platform.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills both soft-skills and technical skills, being in the workplace and working with clients has thought me the value of effective communication, i was able to interact with many people at all sorts of levels. I have really developed my coding skills which i learnt in university to a whole new level, and understanding how applications work end to end really help put into perspective the inner workings of modern programs. Plus seeing how it's done at a large scale in a big organisation and the best practises that goes along with it helped my learning a lot.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given quite a lot of responsibility in the project teams I was working in. You can also assume as much responsibility as you can take as there is not really any limitation of what you are able to do, if you can do it. For one particular client project I was given responsibility for many key functionalities and integrations which really threw me into the deep end each time, but allowed me to learn deeply about the technology. I had also delivered whole epics as part of the project as well.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The community is very helpful and approachable, it was important especially when I first joined as I received lots of help and advice from senior colleagues, and throughout if I ever needed help or had an issue with something there was always someone that I could reach out to. In terms of guidance, I had a meeting with my task manager every week just to talk about anything and make sure I was getting the most out of the placement.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is great here, everyone is really helpful and approachable and that kind of feeds into you reciprocating it as well, it creates this supportive and inclusive work environment. You won't feel scared or intimidated and it's almost as if it should be more scary, in a good way. It's also very lively, fast-paced and young, many people are in their early careers so you won't feel out of place and everyone is there to help each other.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I personally enjoyed my placement a lot, it was a great experience socially and professionally. The wider intern community was quite large and very active, we had events quite often, at least monthly on average to know each other better; they're probably the best memories. In terms of work, I learnt a lot working with our client projects from managing the relationship, communication, complex integration work, full-stack development and overall team work. What made the placement great was the people I was surrounded by.

  • 7. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • Even if you are not sure what to do, IBM is definitely a place to learn, they are very flexible with the work you do as their goal for you is to make sure you get the most of your time with them. Whether that be a role you did not initially join for as long as you find it valuable you can keep pursing it and beyond. IBM is also very people-centric, it does not really matter if you do not have the technical skill yet but show the willingness and motivation to keep learning, they will want to see that in you.
