Overview
I work on campaigning strategy through various different forms. I work on social media strategy, designing posts and drafting captions, I organise case studies and learn the best practise of how to collate and store them. I write email newsletters and do inbox management. I also frequently have calls with members from different teams to see how their work can help mine but also as a learning opportunity. I also work with the public affairs team doing ad hoc tasks like stakeholder mapping, event scanning and monitoring.
Skills
I have had the chance to develop writing skills, through writing email newsletters, social media captions and also responding to supporter enquiries. I've learnt about social media strategy and how to create and design posts that are optimised to do well on the platform. My communication skills have been strengthen greatly. I've also learnt how to make a stakeholder map, how to monitor debates in Parliament, and how to use platforms like email builder and engaging networks.
Responsibilities
Yes, whilst I was given a set of of tasks to do, I was given the freedom to be creative and have a go at things myself. The support from my manager and team was always there, and having weekly 1-2-1 sessions is very valuable for helping to see if I'm achieving my goals and for feedback on my work. I value the fact I was given autonomy to go about my tasks in my own way.
Support & Guidance
I had weekly 1-2-1 sessions with my manager, where we would of course discuss how my projects were going along but also would discuss how my focus areas were coming along if I felt like I was achieving what I wanted to. The wider team, were also very helpful and I could always drop them a teams message or email with a question or problem I was facing. There would be weekly team discussion where we can all discuss through any challenges or updates we're facing. A very supportive environment.
Culture
The company culture felt very supportive to me. I was in contact with a lot of other teams and everyone always had time to talk and explain their work to me. From what I saw, it looks like everyone has weekly 1-2-1 sessions with their one managers. There's also opportunities to speak to SLT. It's a very supportive environment to work in, especially do an internship in, and everyone is really helpful and are overall nice people.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. I learnt a lot, I was doing actual work and not a made up task. I was given the responsibility to just do things and my manager was always there to guide me and give me feedback. I had varied tasks which meant I didn't get bored and it was kept interesting. There were many learning and development opportunities with a whole platform dedicated to it, but also online organisation wide calls about specific topics. I enjoyed my internship and would recommend and come back to work here.
Yes
I would say, even if you don't have a lot of experience, speak about whatever you've done has helped you. I know everyone says it but use the STAR method, this was first time I did and it was the first time I didn't get rejected. Have some awareness around your sector. Make a list of what you have done, so you know exactly what you've done and then compare with the job description to see how it can help you.
